On this day 46 years ago I gave birth to a baby girl. We named her Maya. She arrived three weeks early so she was was tiny, just 5 lbs. 4 oz. For the rest of her life, Maya was in a hurry.

Friends called her “Barbie” because of her white-blonde hair. She had dark brown eyes that snapped when she was angry and gleamed with mischief. She had the loudest burp of anyone I ever knew; it rumbled up and out like a car backfiring.

Once, when we were driving through the McDonald’s parking lot in Walnut Creek, a black Mercedes sedan headed straight for us. I swerved to avoid a head to head collision and slammed on the brakes.

“Mercy upon us,” I said, extending my right arm instinctively to protect Maya in the passenger seat.

“Mom, don’t you mean ‘Mercedes upon us?’ ” Maya quipped.

The tension broke and we sat in the parking lot laughing over our narrow escape.

No one could make me laugh as much and no one could push my buttons the way she did. She was my best friend as well as my first born. Today, Maya would be turning 46. Imagine that!

Every year on October 4, I celebrate her brief, intense, eventful life. I’m glad she was here and, like a shooting star, left a streak of light to mark her passing. Happy Birthday, darling Maya. Your light still shines!
